Default Red Squiggles have disappeared!

Hi,
I've encountered a recent problem in which the red squiggles have
stopped showing up. The green squiggles from the grammar check still
work. I've looked on the Word Options, and under the Proofing Options,
the box for "Check spelling as you type" is checked, although the
program is failing to put on the squiggles. I was wondering if anybody
else had encountered this problem or knows of any solution for it.
Thanks so much!

I just checked again, and it turns out that the problem is not just
the red squiggles; the entire spellcheck feature of MS isn't working.
All options that are checked indicate that it should be working....
Any advice?

Well I'm having the same problem with Word 2003--no spell check under
Vista. And your link doesn't address the issue.

Specifically, certain routine words are marked as spelling errors
(such as "filled"), and NO suggestions show up in the suggestions
box. I have the language under the default US setting and all the
checkboxes properly checked.

This is for Word 2003 working under Vista. The same copy (literally)
of Word 2003 works fine under XP.

Any suggestions appreciated. Apparently this is a common bug and one
thread suggested modifying the registry, but I'm not clear where to
modify.

Surfing the net, I found a suggestion to delete the "Proofing Tools"
folder in the registry using RegEdit. I found this in the registry
under Microsoft\Shared TOols\ Proofing Tools\, did that, and it did
not fix the problem.

The only partial workaround I found is under Word 2003 to check the
checkbox "correct while you type" (or similar). THis will change
"catttle" to 'cattle' for example, and catch obvious typos like this,
but it will not give "Suggestions" when doing Spell Check.

Again, Word 2003 running under Vista Ultimate OS.

Thanks,

RL

OK, I "fixed" this bug for now, but there's no guarantee, from reading
other threads, that this will work for you or even for me.

In Word 2003:

I went to Tools| Customize| Reset and reset all my toolbars...I
honestly don't think this solved the problem, but, then...

Under Tools| Language| Set Language make sure all checkboxes are not
checked ("Do not check spelling.." and "Detect Language
automatically") then...

I deleted all Normal.dot templates in my computer (renamed them) after
finding them using Search (include all hidden and system files in your
search). There were two on my system. Exit Word before doing this.

I did NOT reboot, and amazingly, when I reloaded Word, Spell check
works. I have unselected "Check as you type", and I've set the
Languages to English (US) (which is my system default).

Amazingly, doing the same thing in Vista (the above was for XP), it
also cured the Word Spell Check bug in Word 2003 (there's also the
same bug in Word 2007, but it apparently involves modifying the
registry key...search the net for this workaround).

Again, your mileage may vary, and in a week from now this 'fix' may
not work even for me (such is the nature of this problem, which seems
to mysteriously come and go, from what I've seen on the net)
