Default have document in Word & want to fill out on computer, how?

I have a document in Word that I believe was originally a template that this
office started using about 7-8 years ago.
What I would like to do is to be able to fill out the form on the computer
and right now it will not let me. Any ideas? I thank anyone for ideas?

Open a document from the Template (File, New...), tab into the first field
and type?
