Default Auto update ref to outline level within outline

Hi All,

I'm using the outline numbered format (1.a.i...) to write step-by-step
directions and at some points I refer to another step by its level numbering.
For instance, I might say, if this is true, goto step 9.b.ii.

If I add or delete a step, Word automatically updates all the subsequent
numbering which means I have to check the document for all references and
manually update them to match the new numbering.

Is there any way to have Word 'link' these references to the outline numbers
so that the references in the body text update when the outline numbers
update?

Thanks you so much for any suggestions/solutions

Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to "Heading" (paragraph number) or
"Numbered item" (paragraph number) as appropriate.
