Default Shift+space, keep words together

For MS Word 2000, how do you do the non-breaking space, keeping 2 items from
separating in text; i. e., October 26 or Form A, etc.

The Shift+spacebar does not work, like in other version of Word.

The shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar in all versions of Word.
