Default AutoRecover problem after power failure

Hi,

The power went out while I writing in MS Word 2003 with SP1. (Window XP Pro
with SP2.) When I was able to restart the computer, I saved my AutoRecovered
document with a new file name and continued to work on it.

Now, every few minutes a notice interrupts my work to tell me "You cannot
save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a
new name." When I click OK, another notice appears saying "Saving the
AutoRecover is postponed for [my file name.]" This happens by itself, not
when I am saving the doc.

Word's Save options are set to Allow background saves; and Save AutoRecovery
info every 10 minutes. I tried saving the document, exiting all programs and
shutting down the computer and restarting it. That didn't help.

What is going on? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Crashing Word causes some temp files to be left behind - see

Graham has already answered your question, but may I provide a suggestion?
Some years back I invested what now seems like a very modest sum on a UPC
(uninterruptible power supply). This has saved me countless hours of
frustration and annoyance (at the very least, the necessity to reboot and
then recover my train of thought), not to mention lost data.

Thanks, Suzanne,

Would you believe, I have two UPS's (and own stock in APC), but forgot that
I had unplugged one when I had to move some equipment. Alas, there's no
backup for that kind of failure.
