Whenever I use the Insert Hyperlink dialog box the box spends a great deal of
time populating a list of folders and files on a seemingly default network
before it lets me paste a URL into the address bar. It makes using this tool
very time consuming.

What can I do to either stop the list from populating at all, or redirect
the box to point to a local folder that is quick to load?

I don't know how to do that, but if you always have a URL ready to paste, it
might be simpler to do
a. ctrl-F9 to insert a pair of field braces { }
b. Type HYPERLINK "" to give you { HYPERLINK "" }
c. paste the URL between the ""

Or create an autotext containing { HYPERLINK "" } so you can insert that bit
easily.

If you need a display text that's different from the URL, ensure you can see
the result and overtype the existing blue display text with the text you
want.

Nasty, but perhaps less nasty than what you are doing at the moment.
