In word, I can't stand that default view. I finally figured out how to turn
it off, but it's still annoying.

Yet to meet anyone who likes it, apart from a poster here a couple of weeks
ago wanting to know how to FORCE his email recipients to use it ... ah well,
one man's meat is another man's poisson.

You CAN choose. Clear the check box for "Allow starting in Reading Layout"
on the General tab of Tools | Options.

The fix you suggest is only temporary. It re-appears like a bad penny EVERY
TIME you open an email attachment.

I just tested this with an attachment in a message I received, and it opened
in Print Layout view. This is in Outlook Express. Perhaps if you are using
Outlook for email the results are different?
