Default Why does Word shut down when file closed?

I have MS Word up and running. I open a file, and when I close it, it
simultaneously closed the whole Word program. Why did this happen and how do
I fix it? Thanks!

don't take it as read, but i believe if you have only one document open, and
you close it, the program assumes you've finished. If you want to open
another, create a new document before closing the finished one.
