I have always been able to change the size of the font in Word by
highlighting the font size in the box and typing a numberin, especially if I
wanted a font size that was not in the dropdown. For some reason, now when I
type a number in say I highlight 12 and type in 17, Word just put 14 in the
box. Also, I used to be able to change the number in the custom colour boxes
by highlighting the color for the R, G or B and typing the number I want, now
when I try to do this, Word won't let me. I have to either use the spinner to
set the numbers.

Can anyone tell me why this happened. I was doing fine and then all of a
sudden, Word changed.

I have always been able to do this in Word.

When you type a number in the font size box, are you pressing Enter? This
behavior changed between (IIRC) Word for Windows 95 and Word 97. The same
may be true in the color dialog.
