Default Link a word drop down field "text" to an excel cell

I have a simple form in Word with a drop down menu with 6 text options.
I would like to link that field to an excel file where I was going to
assign each text a value to allow calculations.

When I try to link I only get "0".

Is this possible...is there a better way to do it?

This is not directly possible, no. It would require macro programming, so
it might be just as "simple" to program all the calculations, rather than
automating Excel "on the side".
