Default word mail merge zip +4 replaced with "0"

Office 2003: when creating labels via mail merge from an excel file. the
zipcode fields (containing a mix of 5-digit zipcodes and zip+4s) are merging
as "0" when the field contains zip+4 data. huh? Did not have this problem in
Office 2000.
