I have found a problem with Themes in Word 2007. The help files state that
when a new theme is applied, it will change the colours of any text formatted
with a heading style (1, 2, 3), etc, and also any paragraph text. The
problem I have is this:

- When applying a theme, The heading styles change colour, but the body
text (normal style) remains black (the font styles do change).

- The body text will only change colour if I modify the normal style to be a
different colour. Once the Normal style is modified, the colour of the body
text will change with each new theme.

- If the normal style is modified again to change the font colour back to
black, it remains black in all themes.

Could anyone explain please?

In brief, Normal style is not supposed to be used for the bulk of your Body
Text. For body text you should use "Body Text" default style or create your
own body text style with name, for example, "MyBodyText"". So you modify the
Font in "MyyBodyText" style - all you are doing now is modifying the Normal
style which is the factory default for all new blank document screens.

Hi Rob,

Whether a particular style picks up the theme colors depends on the way the style is defined to use theme color attribute or a
'hard' color.

If the Font color is set to 'automatic' it following the Windows appearance defined 'automatic' color (by default - black),
likewise if it is hard set to a color choice (red, green, yellow, etc) that color stays when you apply a font.

If you define the style to use one of the 'Theme color' elements then when you select a different theme color set the color for any
text using tthat style will change to match what is defined as the theme color for that element.


For example,

1. Start a new blank document.

2. In the document type
=lorem(14,1)
and press enter.

3. From Home=Styles=Change Styles=Style Set
select the 'Word 2007' style set.

4. Place the cursor in the first paragraph and in
Home=Styles,
apply the 'Heading 1' style from the Quick styles gallery.

5. In Home=Styles click on the Styles 'launcher' (the arrow/square at bottom right of the Styles group).

6. In the bottom of that work pane click the middle icon to launch the 'Style inspector'

7. Click your cursor into the first paragraph in the document (the one with Heading 1 applied) and then in the Style Inspector,
hover the mouse over the 'Heading 1' paragraph formatting block and you should see something like 'Font color: Accent 1'.

8. Click into the 2nd paragraph, and hover the mouse in the Style Inspector over the 'Normal' choice and you won't see a Font color
definition (i.e. the style is using 'automatic' - it (and the body style) are not theme enabled out of the box), as for regular
typing colored text would likely not be the first choice

9. To see how a theme color set is constructed, you can use
Page Layout=Themes
and select the 'Theme colors' choice and at the bottom select
Create New Theme colors.

10. Note the 'Accent 1' color. This is what you would be seeing currently for Heading 1 in your document.

11. If you create a style, as Jen mentioned, or modify an existing style to use one of the theme elements then your color element
is applied as you mouse over when 'Live preview' is enabled.

12. In the Quick Styles gallery in the home tab you can get an idea of which styles are currently theme color enabled by their
appearance in the gallery thumbnails.
