Default How can I see a text code, such as the code for 'line return'?

When the lines of a text message are made short by 'line returns' at the end
of each line, I would like to be able to delete them and allow the lines to
'wrap' from line to line using the full width of the page.

Possibly a variation on the issue described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555169 "WD: Word Quits
Unexpectedly When Selecting a Document from the Windows Taskbar".
