Default inconsistent footnote format

I am working with a 600 page document that has abou 1000 footnotes. The
footnote formatting is inconsistent throughout the document. While I've been
able to clear formatting and thereby make the font uniform, some of the
footnotes contain the number followed by a period and a tab and then the
footnote text, and other footnotes just contain the number followed by the
footnote text. For example:
3. footnote text
4 footnote text

Is there any way to automatically change the footnote styles to be the same?

Default inconsistent footnote format

Some of the MVPs may have better suggestions, but I would suggest that your
problem is obviously in formatting your footnote text. I am not sure what
you mean by saying you were able to clear formatting. If you have already
confirmed the correct format settings in the style for Footnote Text, (the
issue sounds like the Paragraph setting for whether or not to indent the
first line) I would make sure you do not have a checkmark for Automatically
Update. Then I would open the Styles window and select all the footnotes
(put your cursor into a footnote and press Ctrl+A; this should select them
all). With all the footnotes selected press Clear Formatting in Styles.
This step should remove any individual formatting in particular footnotes
that may override your Footnote Text style. With all the footnotes still
selected now click Footnote Text. You should now have the same consistent
formatting for all the footnotes. It worked for me when I tried it, but I
have no documents anywhere near the size of yours. If this doesn't work,
sorry for wasting a few minuts of your life-- wait for more learned help
