Default When opening a new doc it opens an old doc instead - Why?

Could someone please tell me how to resolve this problem. If I open an
existing doc. it is fine and templates are also ok but the new/blank Doc doc
link appears to be corrupt.
When I uninstall and re-install office it makes no difference.
I have also uninstalled office and deleted the office folder in explorer ...
to no effect!
Would this be resolved if i deleted all registry settings in regedt32? Or is
there a simpler soln.?
Cheers
