Default Paragraph settings in footnotes

Hi

I'm currently using Microsoft 97, and continue to encounter a problem
with setting the paragraph formatting to a preferred or default
setting(ie, spacing within page ). Note that it only happens with
footnotes - the main text paragraphing remains configured as desired).

Basically, I also want to automatically set or configure my footnotes
to the desired setting, but I have to manually adjust each footnote
individually. Generally speaking, I leave most askew until I do a
'select all' function and align the mess after the fact, but would
prefer not to have to do this indefinitely.

Any suggestions welcome.

thanks
Michelle

Have you modified the Footnote Text style?

Yes, I've modified the footnotes to my preferred settings of

Alignment- justified
Indentation - right : 1.27 cm, left: -1.4 cm

But, how do I make this the default setting for all documents please?

As with ANY style change, you must save it to a template. By default, if you
don't select a template, it will only be saved to the template of the
document you are working on. If you always use normal (the global) template,
then save it to that and all your documents will have that style. If you
have several templates, then you may need to add it for each template. Use
the Organizer to copy that style across to the other templates.

thanks for the quick response Terry - much appreciated.

Given my inherent stupidity, though, I would particularly appreciate
instructions on how to do this - or, alternatively, a link that might
instruct me on the steps required?

thanks again

Presuming that you have saved the edited Footnote Style in Normal.dot...

Open the Organizer (access it through, Tools, Templates and Addin dialog)
and it will default with normal selected in the left window. In the right
Window, click OPEN and navigate to the template you need to update. When you
have both sides displaying, click on the Styles TAB and in the list under
Normal scroll down to Footnote and select it. Now use the COPY button and OK
the question about so you want to overwrite...

Click OK to exit the template and answer YES when prompted to save changes
to the template. Either open another template and repeat the steps or close
the dialog if finished.

Note that the Organizer is able to copy across other customizations too by
selecting the appropriate tab.

It rather depends on what version of Word you're using, but see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styl...ifyAStyle.html for the general
principles. When you have modified the Footnote Text style, check the box
for "Add to template" in the Modify Style dialog.
