Default Select function

Greetings!

I currently have Word 2006. When I left click my mouse, the entire text
above is selected/highlighted. It is not highlighted with a color, but
shaded as if I 'selected' it. How do I turn this function off?

Thanks!

AFAIK, there is no Word 2006. Is this a Mac or PC version?
