Default Empty Date External field returns current date

Using Word 2002, Excel 2002:

Excel is the external data source
Where a date field is blank, the merge field returns the current date. I've
tried to eliminate with
{IF {MERGEFIELD thatdate}="" "" "Date reported: {MERGEFIELD thatdate \@
etc}"}, but the result is the same.

Thanks for listening..!

If {Mergefield thatdate} produces the current date when empty, then basing
the condition on a nul result from an allegedly empty record isn't going to
help. You have to work with what you actually get not what you think it
should be. See is the Excel data section of
http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_lab...th_word_xp.htm helps.

Thanks Graham

I've selected an alternative connection method (can't remember which one
now, but it works).
