Default Valid activated office xp fails validation as not activated, why?

I had to force Word to close as it was not responding, suggested action is to
update but I fail the validation because the already activated product is
deemed unactivated?

Does this mean that all support for office XP has now ended and i merely
rented the program for 4 years? Do I have to go to Open office now?

No, nothing of that sort. Probably the forced close damaged the
registry key that tells Word that it has been activated. You need to
contact MS Product Support by telephone. According to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295539,

"For information about replacement manuals, disks, drivers and service
packs, product orders, policies related to copying software on
additional computers, licensing, and product registration, Microsoft
Customer Service is available Monday through Friday, from 6:30 A.M. to
5:30 P.M. Pacific time. To contact Microsoft Customer Service, call
(800) 426-9400."

The extended support period for Office XP will continue through July
12, 2011.
