Default deleted but still there

I have a 2007 document that I open in Word 2003. After selecting
"select all" and deleting everything, I still see all the text.
However, if I then select anything and try to delete or copy it,
Word would say the selection has been deleted.

Why is it still there if it has been deleted? Does this have
anything to do with tracking changes? Thanks.

Hmm, in a document where you are tracking changes, deleting text that is
marked for deletion wouldn't generate an error message. If this only happens
with that one document, try Open and Repair.

Yes. Accept the changes and your deletions will go away. If you don't want
to see this problem again, turn off track changes.

You're kidding, of course.
