Default shift key producing alternate characters

While working in Word, my shift key suddenly began to produce incorrect
characters - e.g. pressing shift and question mark produces an odd letter
with a diacritical mark. How do I get it back to normal? (I see it's working
here, but not in Word)

Somehow Word has been set to another language.

alt shift

switches to the next available language setting, like

english german spanish english german spanish ...
