Default Pre-release Compatibility

I used the pre-release version of Office 2007 for a brief time, but decided
to stick with 2003. I have installed the Compatibility Pack, but when I try
and open some of the Word files created using beta-Word 07, I get the error
message:

"This is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack and can open
pre-release Office 2007 files only. Do you want to check for a newer version
of the CP?"

But this makes no sense since the file I am trying to open IS a pre-release
file, and the CP I am using is the latest version.

Help!

The compatibility pack doesn't work on the original beta files. Were you
running the Tech Refresh version?

No, I did not install the TR version.

Here's what I've done as a work around - I've installed a trial version of
Office 2007 (selected the Customize option to install only the programs I
wanted and to keep the old versions), and opened the files using Word 2007,
then saved them as Word 97-2003 files. Word 2003 was then able to open them.

A clearer error message, or a clearer explanation of the limitations of the
CP would have been helpful.

I'm glad you found a workaround. I'll bet you appreciate why most of us were
telling people to download the beta with caution.

Indeed!

And I don't recommend the work around either as even though I had checked
"don't remove older versions," I've still had to do a re-install of 2003 (and
to go find the original CD to do it). This has been only slightly less
annoying than re-creating the documents from scratch.

Sometimes we learn important lessons the hard way. It ain't fun but they
REALLY stick.

I have a feeling I'm learning one of those hard lessons, but I'm
hopeful that there's a solution. I'm also having trouble opening a
file saved in a pre-release version of Word 2007. The problem is it
was saved as a Word 97-2003 document (I would think to ensure
compatibility) but now won't open in either Word 2007 or Word 2003
with compatibility pack.

I just keep getting an error message saying "This document was created
in a pre-release version of Word 2007 and cannot be opened in this
version".

This is a VERY important document containing many hours of notes taken
for a research project. Is there any way to convert/open this file?
Why can't I open a document saved in "compatibility mode"???

Any help is VERY much appreciated.

The answer is in that error message. It was saved with a beta version of
Word and is not compatible with the released version. I didn't run the beta
for several reasons so I can't tell you how to correct it. I would try to
open the document with Notepad or WordPad and see it that would work. Even
if it's just text, it's better than nothing.
