Hi,
I have a normal Word document I'm trying to insert a chart into. When I
launch the Insert Chart Wizard, Excel launches and I can modify data, etc,
but it will not allow me to Update the Chart (CTRL-S) - the function is
greyed out. Additionally, all that is displayed in my word document is an
outline, not a chart itself. When I try and copy an existing Excel chart into
my document, all I get is the very bottom of the chart outline.

I can create a chart in a blank document no problem, and I can create a
chart in other documents but when I try and create a chart in my existing
document I get the above symptoms instead of the chart. The only difference
is I have copied the text (highlight text using text tool, copy & paste into
word) into my document from a pdf file. I can still edit the text any way I
choose - it appears perfectly normal to me.

Please enlighten me if I'm being a bonehead, or if anyone else has
encountered this please let me know if there's a workaround.

I suspect that the text you pasted into the document brought with it
an "Exact" line spacing -- that would explain seeing only the bottom
of the chart.

Right-click in the paragraph that contains the chart, choose Paragraph
from the menu, and make sure the line spacing says "At least" or
"Multiple".

You shouldn't need to save (which is what Ctrl+S does) in Excel; the
changes you make to the data in Excel will be reflected immediately in
the chart in Word, and that's where the data is saved.

Thanks for the reply; afraid this isn't a factor - I literally cannot insert
a chart into the document - anywhere! Even more strange, if I just cut / copy
a paragraph out of the document and paste it into a new document, I won't be
able to insert a chart in the new document either - either it's a property of
the text I'm copying which is preventing the insertion,, or it's some kind of
voodoo curse!

I don't believe voodoo curses work on software -- although I know
there are gremlins. :-)

There is certainly some setting in the copied text that's causing the
effect, but I don't have any other suspects at the moment. If you care
to send me a sample, I'll have a look at it.

Managed to circumvent the problem - when inserting my text, used 'Paste
Special' and insert text as 'unformatted unicode text' - seemed to solve the
problem. Thanks for help!
