Default Word 2003 Window Inactive when new document is opened

When I click on the word 2003 quick launch/startup menu icon, Word opens up,
but I cannot type into the window without first clicking on it. Is there a
way to ensure that the Word 2003 window is active when I start it up from the
quick launch bar or the start menu?

When I open up existing documents, the window is automatically active.

Thanks,

Is it possible you are you double-clicking the shortcuts in the Quick Launch
toolbar or Start Menu?

Unfortunately not. I am not double clicking the shortcuts. A single click of
the shortcut opens up a new Microsoft Word 2003 window. If I try immediately
typing into the window, nothing happens. I have to then click anywhere on/in
the window to make it active.

FWIW, I saw this behavior when I had an outdated add-in installed that was
not compatible with the version of Word I was running. I don't know whether
it was opening a dialog behind the Word window or what, but the focus
problem was solved when I uninstalled the add-in.
