Default Save/Save As Menu Options Don't Save Document

Word 2003--XP. I open my template to begin a new report and now I can't save
the report (when I click Save nothing happens, when I click Save As nothing
happens, when I try to close the doc I am prompted as to whether to save the
changes, but clicking Yes does not save anything). Been working with Word for
15 years and I never saw anything like this. Bottom line, can't save a
document based on this template (which we've been using for years) but saving
other documents (i.e., a new document) is not a problem.

Sound familiar to anyone? Please advise with thanx!

Default Save/Save As Menu Options Don't Save Document

Hi ?B?ZXJpa19ncmVnb3J5?=,

Word 2003--XP. I open my template to begin a new report and now I can't save
the report (when I click Save nothing happens, when I click Save As nothing
happens, when I try to close the doc I am prompted as to whether to save the
changes, but clicking Yes does not save anything). Been working with Word for
15 years and I never saw anything like this. Bottom line, can't save a
document based on this template (which we've been using for years) but saving
other documents (i.e., a new document) is not a problem.

Can't remember ever seeing anything like this before, but...

A standard trouble-shooting step I'd try is to:
- open the template
- see if you can "Save As" to the Word 2003 XML file format (or RTF)
- close the template, open again and save back to the Word document file
format
- test whether a new document can be saved

If that doesn't work, are you able to insert the template into a (plain) new
document? That would let you at least save all the text with formatting. You'd
need to recreate headers, footers, margins, etc.

If that also doesn't work, can you get an older document, save it as a template,
then reconstruct the template based on that? (I might also round-trip it through
Word XML, just to be sure it doesn't contain any of the "junk" that caused the
current template to fail.)
