In the same folder is there a file with the same name but the extension
".wbk"? If there is, that's a backup copy of the file. Make a copy of it and
give the copy the ".doc" or whatever extension your original had.

If there isn't then you're out of luck. The file's gone forever.

Normal.dot is the file your computer opens when you open Word. It should be
blank.

Which file is messed up? Your work file or Normal.dot?

Not file, folder. In the folder where your document was saved, is there
another file whose name begins with "Backup of" and whose extension is
".wbk"?
