Default cross reference obscure mistake

I had successfully cross-referenced an appendix list with appendix references
in a document. Now when I modify an appendix text, some of the refernces in
the main body of text have added a section break and reformatted pages to
Landscape from Portrait. I ahve to manually delete section breaks to restore
the document's appearance. What did I do to add these section breaks?

The cross-reference feature depends on hidden bookmarks being added to
referenced paragraphs. Now, the problem is that if you add contents to the
beginning of a bookmarked paragraph, the bookmark expands to include the
added contents. To work around this, always add at the end of the
*preceding* paragraph instead.
