Default Numbers for heading styles

I am making a user manual and I have my own style for headings. Now I want to
number all my 2nd level headings in the document. However, since I already
have several saved styles for number lists (which is already causing me
trouble with all that restart numbering business) I am afraid that my whole
document will be messed up. How do I do this? Word 2003.
