Hello, I have add endnotes and suppressed them until the end of the last
section of the document. The endnote references have now suddenly disappeared
from the end of the section, but the numbering still appears within the text.
Can anyone help.

My guess is that you suppressed endnotes in the last section, so
Word is waiting for you to insert another section at the end of
the document before it displays endnotes. Endnotes should not be
suppressed in the last section.
