using win xp / word 2002

1. Have chosen a background in web layout and want to print the document
displaying the background. Printer wil not print it - just get normal white
background. Have tried watermark command but cannot track down the background
i want inside the files and folders - also watermark does not cover full page
when i test how watermark works with another image i chose. How do i execute
the printing of a word document with a background?

Web backgrounds are inherently non-printable. [You wouldn't want the
fancy graphical background of a webpage to print.]

You need to create the watermark differently. I don't have a Word 2002
to test here, but what you can do in all versions is anchor a picture in
the header or footer.

As Robert has indicated "Backgrounds" are intended for Web pages only, not
for printed documents. In Word 2003, an option was added to print
"Background colors and images," but the only way to do this in Word 2002 is
to save the document as a Web page, open it in a browser, and print it from
there, after changing the browser print settings to include backgrounds.

To avoid this workaround, instead of using a background, you can use the
Printed Watermark option in Format | Background, but you have found that you
can't get the desired background this way. Aside from Picture (which is the
same for Printed Watermark), the fill options in Background are the same as
those offered for fill in AutoShapes. So create your own background as
follows:

1. View | Header and Footer.

2. Draw a rectangle covering the entire page.

3. Fill it with the desired color, gradient, texture, etc.

4. Set its wrapping to Behind Text.

Note that your printer probably won't be able to print the background clear
to the edge, as all printers (even photo printers) have some minimum
unprintable area at full-page size..
