Default Want Overtype mode on as default in Word

I would like to have the "ovr mode" on all the time in word, but don't know
how to set it as a default. I have to click on the insert button all the
time. Any help would be much appreciated.

This will work for the one time, but how do I make it stay a the default for
all new word documents. It won't let me change the normal.dot document.

Settings you make in the Options dialog should be saved when you quit Word.
If your settings are not being saved, it may be that the Word Data key in
the Registry is damaged; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm. But note that
pressing the Insert key when you are working in another application will
change the setting in Word as well.
