If I copy a word file with hyperlinks in it to CD, will the hyperlinked files
automatically copy to the CD as well?

no.

And you have to make sure that the hyperlinks are relativ only, or
whoever clicks on the link on his CD might not find the target. Best
make sure target files are in the same directory with the DOC file.

a hyperlink can be absolute, i.e., referencing the full address, like:

http://server/file.doc

Dito if the link points to a file on your harddisk:

C:\folder\file.doc

But it can be relative only, to the file where it is linked from. Say,
if the source document is in C:\temp, and the target in
C:\temp\subfolder, then a relative link can be only:

subfolder\file.doc

And if the target is in the very same folder as the source, only:

file.doc

Using relative links is mandatory if you move both files (i.e.: to CD).
Sometimes Word converts relative links into absolute ones on saving or
reopening, and I seem to remember there are settings in Tools | Options
"somewhere" (Hyperlink base) which need to be unchecked to be on the
safe side (but I cannot test right now).

Robert, Do you know what option in Word cause relative links to be converted
to absolute ones. I had a co-worker review a document located on our
network, after they reviewed and saved their changes all the links in the
document were converted to absolute links and the document does not reside
there. see example below

changed to: file:///c:\Documents and Settings\thomas\Local
Settings\Reference.pdf

no, I don't. I'd check the HYPERLINK BASE (if there's any in your
unnamed version of Word). But since I don't have a server at hand right
now, I can't even test all that easily ... :-)

Thanks Robert. I checked the hyperbase of the co-worker and it was empty.
Its a mystery. I suspect she moved the document, reviewed it, saved it and
then moved it back to the original location. This may have caused the links
to change.
