Default Table of contents styles not working

In Word 2003 I am trying to modify the table of contents styles -- adjusting
font, spacing, tabs...

In the Index and Tables dialog box I click modify and update the styles --
but when I regenerate the styles have not udpated. I check the styles again
and they are set as I specified.

Also -- I do not see the table of contents styles in the list of styles --
I'm used to seeing them in Styles and Formatting pane -- I have specified all
styles.

Note that direct font formatting added to headings will reflect in the table
of contents, which could explain why you haven't seen any changes.

To see the TOC styles in the Styles and Formatting task pane, follow the
instructions under "Big idea 1" in the article at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/sfpa...ttingPane.html.

Default Table of contents styles not working

Thank you -- I can now see the TOC styles -- and I have checked that I have
not character formatting on the headings to be included in the TOC.

However I still can't get the styles to udpate in the table of contents --
when I generate the TOC again, its styles go back to the old setting (nto the
correct one I applied manually.

I have created a blank test document with just my styles in -- to make sure
I ahveCreating brand new document -- still no joy.

Can you suggest anything else I should look at.

Thanks Judith

When I click on an entry in the TOC, I can manually apply the style.

I have checked that the style is the same in both the S&F pane and the
Modify dialog in the Insert Table task.

If you select the actual TOC and press Ctrl+SpaceBar to reset its font
formatting, and then update the TOC with F9, does that make a difference?
