the equation editor web states: "Notes You can modify the font, font size, position (for example, subscript or superscript), or format (normal, bold, or italic) of characters or symbols by selecting them and then choosing commands from the Style and Size menus." but I can never seem to be able to bold a symbol inside the equation ? Answer: How can I bold a symbol in an Equation object in Word 2003?
If the above steps do not work, you can try selecting the entire equation object and then applying bold formatting to the entire equation. To do this, follow these steps:

Possibly the formatting is available only for characters in Text style?

How can I bold a symbol in an Equation object in Word 2003? What you quoted from the Help file should have worked, except that it's not necessary to first select the part of the equation you want to be bold. With Equation Editor open, Word's menu bar becomes the Equation Editor menu bar. The Style menu is what controls the fonts, as well as bold & italic settings. Click on Style Define and make sure "Bold" is checked for all settings. This will make the entire equation bold, not just part of it. (Fraction bar thickness is controlled in the Format Spacing dialog.) The professional version of Equation Editor -- MathType -- has two user-defined style settings (as well as two user-defined size settings). Using these settings, it is possible, for example, to make a divide symbol bold and the rest of the equation "normal". I didn't choose the best example in the world, since it's not necessary to use User1 Style in order to make the division symbol bold. That can be done by making Symbol Style bold. For a better example, let's say you want to discuss with a class the limit as x approaches zero of 1 + x over 1 - x. You want to discuss the importance of the denominator, so you make 1 - x bold with User1 Style. That can't be done in Equation Editor. -- Bob Mathews bobm at dessci.com Director of Training http://www.dessci.com/free.asp?free=news FREE fully-functional 30-day evaluation of MathType 5 Design Science, Inc. -- "How Science Communicates" MathType, WebEQ, MathPlayer, MathFlow, Equation Editor, TeXaide |
