Default I saved, but where is my new data!

I was working on an existing file in Word over a period of 2 hours. I did a
File-Save from the menu several times.

Then, I had to go to the bathroom, so I figured I'd just press the power key
on my new laptop thinking it would go to some sort of standby mode. Anyhow, I
came back and pressed the power button and it did a complete restart... oh,
well, I thought. I loaded word and opened my document and all of my 2 hours
work was GONE!

I don't get it. No, I did not shut Word down, but I did a FILE-SAVE twice
while working. Why isn't my stuff there? Where is it? If it is gone, does
that mean File-Save doens't truly work until you shut Word down? Bizarre.

Thanks for any help

You need to re-open the document. If you saved it, it's on your hard disk
wherever you put it. It's up to you to know where that is. It should be at
the top of the list at the bottom of the File menu.

If you powered down your computer, you DID shut down Word.

Hi Jezebel,

It's possible that Word was not able to add the file name to the MRU list.

No, it was not an email attachment...

And I did reopen it immediately after turning the laptop on again... I've
tried reopening via the File menu as well as directly from file manager.
Everytime none of my data is there! It's voodoo!

When you do a File-Save, doesn't Word TRULY modify the source file, or is it
writing the mods to a temp file of some sort until you CLOSE the doc????

I did a little test by opening a file, adding one sentence, then doing a
File-Save, then doing a CTRL-ALT-DEL and ending the Word task. Reopening the
doc revealed the new sentence was NOT there. What the !!!???

PS This is Word 97...

FOUND IT!!!

It took a few hours, but I found it!

A few hours ago I searched for .asd and .tmp but didn't find any... thought
it was strange. I also couldn't find the directories where it supposedly
stores these files...

This was still bugging me, so just now in Explorer I went to the
Tools-Options menu and saw that system files were hidden, so I checked the
box to show them.

Now I could see the temp file directories and one word backup document, and
got excited when the modifiend date was during the session when I lost the
data! I opened the file and indeed, there was my data... I knew it had to be
somewhere!
