Default Why isn't my backspace key deleting the character?

I am trying to edit a document. The backspace key is not deleting the
character, but the cursor is moving backward as if I was using the arrow key.
Any suggestions?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
