Default Creating template with Word 2007 and then saving ast 97-2003 versi

I have a user that is creating templates in Word 2007 and then saving them as
97-2003 which creates the .DOT file. The problem they are running into is
that people are able to fill in the template and save the data in the .DOT
file. Why aren't they being prompted to rename the file to a .DOC file?
Should they be doing something special while they are in Word 2007?
