Default Incorrect font displaying

Strange behaviour in Word 2000.
Font shows up as Times New Roman, even though the font is actually Arial.
Same document opened in Open Office shows Arial correctly, so I know that
Arial is installed. Actually even if I change it to something weird like
Batang it still shows up on the screen as Times New Roman. This makes it
difficult to do any layout work.
Did a quick Google but couldn't find anybody else who has this problem.
The problem persists with a reboot

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | uncheck the "Draft
font" box | OK.
