Default Gibberish replaced text

I recently moved one of my files on a usb key, and when I reloaded the
document and loaded it, the letters were replaced by a squared symbol. I
read one of the posts which said to push ctrl+*, when I did that the text
then changed to what looks like a y with two dots above it. Can someone
please help me recover this document so that I can read it. Time is of the
essence. Thank You.

I realized that it went from the squared symbol to the y symbol because I
pushed the show/hide paragraph breaks button. However, I still haven't been
able to recover the original text...as per message below.

Without specifics about where & how it came from one place to another it's
impossible to be sure, but what you describe sounds like either a missing
font/character or language issue. It *could* also be corruption or anything
in between, but you don't even mention what version(s) of Word is/are
involved.
