Default formulas stopped working in word

I was working in microsoft word and had created a table which has numbers in.
When trying to create a formula to add up all the rows it stopped working
and now instead of adding up the sum it just displays the formula which is
=sum(above). I don't know why it has stopped doing the actual sum as it was
fine before.

You only need to toggle field codes. To do this, press Alt+F9.

The formula is a field and fields can be in two modes: they can show the
result, i.e. the content that will print, or they can show the code behind.
Alt+F9 toggles field codes on and off.
