Default Mail Merge Edit Failure Dialog or Database

I have Word 2002 SP3 and created a template and address database (dmp) under
the Mail Merge Wizard and sucessfully printed the 12 letters. On review, I
caught some misspellings in the database and went back in to edit and
received the message "This operation could not be completed because of dialog
or database engine failure. Please try again later." Using the same
document, I could edit other databases. I exited Word and reopened and got
the same message. Ultimately, I saved the template as a word document,
retyped into a new database and was able to edit. This took some time.

It is obvious that some error occurred in the first database, but don't know
what. I had other Word Windows open for printing of envelopes, and did open
mail merge template several times in an attempt to print return envelopes.

I found no help on the error message itself. Is there anything I could
have done otherwise for future reference?

Why did the error message say "try again later"
