I have a document where we have the captions numbering to heading 2. The
person wrtiing this document want a particular table to be based off heading
4 instead of heading 2, but wants everything else to remain off heading 2. I
can change the field code to read styleref 4 /s but then that seems to
cascade throughout the document. i have automatic updates off for that
particular style. Any idea how to go about getting this one caption to do
it's own thing without hardcoding the numbers? Thanks.

As you've seen, the Caption dialog box will undo any manual changes to
field codes; it restores them to match the settings selected in the
dialog box. In other words, if you want to use multiple formats for a
single type of caption, you have to avoid the Caption dialog box.
Instead, use copy and paste to create new captions, or save the
desired format(s) as AutoText entries, which you can insert as needed.
On the other hand, if only one caption should have a different format,
why not simply type it in?
