Default How do I place a counter on a template in word?

I would like Word to create a unique number to print on the document each
time the template is opened. Is that possible?

See the article "Creating sequentially numbered documents (such as
invoices)" at:

I have followed all the steps and an auto number does not appear. Is there
something I am missing? I created an "order" bookmark, created the AutoNew
macro, went into Visual Basic with Alt-F11 chose this document and "New" and
saved the template. But, when I open the template (and create a new
document) there is nothing there. Have I missed a step?

Are you sure that the AutoNew macro is in the template?

When you say you "open the template (and create a new document) are you
doing this by selecting New from the File menu and then selecting the
template as the basis of the document that you want to create?

No, I double clicked the template from an open window.

In the Visual Basic Editor, make sure to add a code module to the
attached template and create the auto macro there.

Clarification: The number will not be added in existing documents
created from the template; it will only be included as new documents
are created.

No, I'm not trying to make it add to existing documents. This is a new
template I'm creating. I want it to create a number when I open a new
document from the template I create.

Please explain how I add a code module to the template and when you say "add
the macro there" do you mean to that template or to that module specifically?
