Can not save to drive "A"
I have several users that can not save some of their documents to drive "A".
We are using Office 2003 professional with the latest patches. The computers are Gateway 4400 and E6000 models. The OS is Windows 2000 pro with all of the latest patches. When I try to re-save a document to drive "A" the computer attempts to save to "A" then freezes, I have to hold the power button in to restart the computer. If I save to "C" then copy to "A" it works. Note: I tested saving to "A" on two XP computers. No problem at all. Before I get a zillion people saying its the floppy, I can copy to the floppy without any problems and I can save to the floppy from any XP box. |

You should never save straight to the A drive. That's an expressway to a
corrupt file. -- JoAnn Paules MVP Microsoft [Publisher] "jacksos" wrote in message ... I have several users that can not save some of their documents to drive "A". You should not save directly to a floppy disk or other removable
media from Office applications, because doing so usually results in file corruption sooner or later. Save to the hard drive, close the file, and then use Windows Explorer or My Computer to copy the file to the removable media. That said, did you recently install Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4? On some systems, this update breaks the ability to save directly to a floppy, and Microsoft is working on a hotfix to correct the issue. We have automatic updates enabled on our workstations, the problem started
about 2 weeks ago after Windows performed an update. None of my XP boxes have this problem. I'd look at that as a warning.

This was probably intentional, because of the problems floppies cause with
Word, by virtue of the temporary files Word needs to create in the current folder, the size and number of which you have no control over. Never ever read from, write to or print from floppy with Word. This is the most certain method of ensuring document corruption. Copy to/from the hard disc and work on the document from there. This is equally relevant to other removable media such as CDRW. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org jacksos wrote: We have automatic updates enabled on our workstations, the problem started about 2 weeks ago after Windows performed an update. If you want to be able to use your documents, when working within Word, act
as if your floppy drive does not exist! (This applies to CDRW/CDR drives as well.) Don't use Word to: Open a document on a floppy Print a document on a floppy Edit a document on a floppy Save a document to a floppy (not even a copy) Word regularly trashes documents on floppy drives! Instead, work on the document using your hard drive. Copy it back and forth using Windows. I know that for some with shared computers (libraries, schools) this is a tough prescription. All I can recommend for that is to use a brand new formatted disk each time you save and don't do any editing. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://www.mvps.org/word which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup.
