Default Suddenly Normal.dot in Recently used file list & Paragraph marks in Headers & Footers?

XPP SP2
Office 2003 SP1

Hello,

I suddenly have a behavior in Word 2003 whereby the 1st entry in the Recently used file list always is Drive:\User\Normal.dot. This Normal.dot entry has never appeared in the Recently used file list previously, unless I edited the Normal.dot directly.

I suddenly also noticed that Paragraph marks have become visible in both Headers and Footers (when without content), when displaying documents in Print Layout View, even though unselected in Tools Options View, as well as being set to No Show through the Show/Hide non-printing characters button on the Tool bar. These paragraph marks have never been visible before in the Headers and Footers, unless I directly edited the Header or Footer regions.

I recently updated my OmniPage 14 with the SP3, after which OminiPage has attached itself with 2 entries at the bottom of the File drop-down menu, just below the Recently used file list. These 2 entries are easy to remove by themselves, but can the OmniPage installation somehow have anything to do with the Normal.dot showing up in the Recently used file list and/or the Paragraph marks now suddenly becoming visible in Headers and Footers?

I know it's difficult to answer a question like that, but I wonder if it might be that (however unlikely), or is it me that accidentally have changed some setting, somewhere? I vaguely recall having seen some tick mark box somewhere about the Normal.dot, but cant't find it

I would strongly suspect that OmniPage is adding controls to Word by
modifying Normal.dot instead of placing an add-in in Word's Startup folder.
This is poor practice and symptomatic of a poorly written add-in (though
even MS is not immune to this folly).

Suzanne,

It appears that you were spot on - and I never even though the though.

I just replaced my present Normal.dot with my last good backup, then it was
back to normal again. No paragraph marks in headers of footers, no more
Normal.dot as 1st entry in the Recently used file list. Problem solved. I
keep a dozen or so, backups of my templates, just in case I need to go back
for some reason.

But why on earth would the people at ScanSoft want to mess up perfectly good
templates for their users? I do not know if I am the only one feeling that
just about aévery application wants complete control over you and your
system, over and above being the only application on the system. Well, we
will probable never get an answer to that one, but thank you very much for
your help, much appreciated.

Best regards,
