Track changes problem
I have tracked changes switched on and any time I switch between the outline
view and the print layout view, any fields I have in the text (cross references to tables and documnet sections) are shown as "deleted" and "formatted" when I switch back to print layout. This is rubbish. Do i have to switch tracked changes off every time I switch views? Any help much appreciated. |

Hi ?B?SWFuIERlbnRvbg==?=,

This is rubbish. Do i have to switch tracked changes off every time I switch views? this kind of thing is a problem in some, but not all problems, of Word. Unfortunately, you don't mention which one you're using... Track changes problem
Hi Ian,
OK, I just ran a quick test in Word 2002. From what I can see, not all field types update; DATE fields do. It's normal for DATE and a couple of other fields to update whenever you switch INTO Print Layout view or Print Preview. The following KB articles explain what kinds of fields update on which actions: "WD97: Fields Updated When Document Repaginated" http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=89953 "The FILENAME field does not automatically update when you open a document in Word 2002 or Word 2003" http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832897 The only thing you could possibly do would be to lock the fields so that they can't update. To do this for the entire document: Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F11. To unlock them (so that they can update): Ctrl+Shift+F11, then turn off track changes (Ctrl+Shift+E), then F9 to force the update. I have tracked changes switched on and any time I switch between the outline view and the print layout view, any fields I have in the text (cross references to tables and documnet sections) are shown as "deleted" and "formatted" when I switch back to print layout. Track changes problem
Hi Cindy,
Thanks for that, locking the fields works fine. The fun will be in remembering to have the fields locked when i switch between outline view and print layout, when track-changes is switched on. Thanks again, Ian "Cindy M -WordMVP-" wrote: Hi Ian, OK, I just ran a quick test in Word 2002. From what I can see, not all field types update; DATE fields do. Hi ?B?SWFuIERlbnRvbg==?=,
Thanks for that, locking the fields works fine. The fun will be in remembering to have the fields locked when i switch between outline view and print layout, when track-changes is switched on. Yeah, I know that feeling :-) you could record a macro that performs the actions (lock switch unlock), assign it to a toolbar button (and/or keyboard command) and use that to switch views. Then you only need to remember to use the button :-) Cindy Meister INTER-Solutions, Switzerland http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindymeister (last update Jun 8 2004) http://www.word.mvps.org This reply is posted in the Newsgroup; please post any follow question or reply in the newsgroup and not by e-mail :-) |
