Default paragraph spaceing

I'm having a problem with spacing all I get is a double space, and any thing
I do to change it doesnt work. This started after opening a word doc from a
friend who was having the same problem. This also happens with bullets

Is there something Im not doing? Or a problem with the program?

Go to Format | Paragraph and make sure that the spacing is set to Single and
there is no Space Before or After. If the problem is not with the paragraph
formatting, then go to the Layout tab of Page Setup and make sure that the
vertical alignment is set to Top.

Suzanne
I did try both of your suggestions but they did not work. Another problem
I've noticed is the spelling auto corret, the red squigly line in now above
the word that is wrong instead of under it..

In Format | Font, make sure that Superscript or Subscript is not selected.
