Default Vertical Alignment within a Line of Text

I have a line of text that has text and pictures. I would like to have the
picture vertically centered with the text, rather than being aligned at the
bottom.

I am using Microsoft Word for Mac. I have tried
FormatDocumentLayoutVertical AlignmentTop/Apply To: Selected Text. Doing
so does not provide the correct results.

Any suggestions?
