Default Underlining spaces

I am unable to find a way to underline spaces following a word or number.
Using shift hyphen appears to work on screen but is darker and lower than the
connected underlined word when I print out the page. Having recently changed
from WordPerfect to Word makes this problem even more frustrating since
WordPerfect will allow me to underline blank spaces with no problem. Any
suggestions?

Hi, Sharon. In Word, click on Tools | Options | Compatibility | check the
"Draw underline on trailing spaces" box | OK.

Alternatively, you can underline ordinary trailing spaces provided the last
one is a nonbreaking space (Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar).
