having created columns I cannot now get the curser out of column one

how do I switch the curser between columns?
If you used the Columns button or the FormatColumns command, you have
newspaper-type columns. Your insertion point will flow to the second column as you fill the first. If you want text on the left to correspond with text directly to its right, use a two-column Table rather than columnar layout formatting.
